IP reputation is the trust score mailbox providers and blacklists assign to a sending IP address based on its mail history, including spam complaints, bounce rates, and spam trap hits. That score determines whether mail from the IP is accepted into the inbox, throttled, sent to spam, or blocked outright.

Most senders start on a shared IP, an address used by many customers of the same email service provider. The provider manages that pool’s aggregate reputation, monitoring complaint rates across every tenant and removing bad actors before they drag the whole pool down. It is a reasonable default for low-to-moderate volume, because the provider is doing the reputation management for you.

Higher-volume senders typically move to a dedicated IP, an address used by a single sender alone. The upside is isolation: reputation reflects only your own mail, with no risk of being punished for a neighbor’s bad behavior on a shared address. The cost is that you now own the warm-up and the ongoing hygiene work the provider used to do for you. Large senders often run several dedicated IPs as a pool, splitting traffic by type: for example, transactional mail on one IP and marketing sends on another, so a reputation problem in one stream does not contaminate the other.

Warming a new IP

A brand-new IP has no history, and mailbox providers treat history-free addresses with suspicion by default, not generosity. Warming an IP means ramping send volume gradually, starting with your most engaged recipients and small daily batches, then increasing volume over roughly two to six weeks as opens and replies stay healthy. Skip the ramp and send full volume from day one, and providers read the sudden spike from an unknown address as exactly the pattern a spam operation would produce, which is the fastest way to get throttled or blocked before the IP ever earns trust.

Blacklists and the public layer of IP reputation

Alongside each provider’s private scoring, third-party blacklists like Spamhaus, Barracuda, and SORBS keep public, binary lists of IPs that have crossed an abuse threshold, built from their own networks of spam traps and abuse reports.
