What goes into a domain's email reputation?

Email domain reputation is the trust score mailbox providers assign to your sending domain. It rises and falls with the signals we read on every check:

  • Blocklist and DNSBL history for the domain and its IPs, including Spamhaus, Barracuda, and SORBS listings
  • Authentication posture: the SPF TXT record, DKIM selector keys, and the _dmarc policy record
  • MX configuration and whether the mail host resolves cleanly
  • Domain age and how long it has been sending mail
  • Disposable, parked, or throwaway-domain patterns

Do you keep a record of the domains I look up?

No. Whether you submit a bare domain or a full address, the lookup runs in memory and is gone the moment the verdict returns. There is no query log to mine, share, or leak.

How do I improve a poor email domain reputation?

Fix the inputs that mailbox providers actually grade. Publish and align SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, warm new domains slowly, keep bounce and complaint rates low, and stop sending to dead addresses. A clean list is the single biggest lever, because bounces and spam-traps are what drag a domain down in the first place.

So the durable fix is hygiene: scrub every list with an email verifier before each campaign. Verifox flags the risky addresses so they never enter your sending stream, which is how a sender reputation recovers and holds.

What's the difference between domain reputation and a blacklist check?

A blacklist check answers one yes-or-no question: is this domain or IP currently listed on a blocklist. Domain reputation is the broader picture. It weighs blocklist history alongside authentication, MX health, and domain age to estimate how mailbox providers will treat your mail. Verifox returns both from the same nine-check engine.

How fast is a domain reputation lookup over the API?

A single reputation read returns in about 380 ms at the median, and under 50 ms when the result is cached. Bulk jobs stream at roughly 10,000 emails per minute on the standard tier, so scoring every sending domain in a CRM is a minutes-long job, not an overnight one.
